About John and Karen Louis

John Louis became a Christian while pursuing his Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering from The City University, London. Upon his graduation in 1985, he entered full-time ministry with the London Church of Christ. There he met Karen McDonald, and they were married in London in 1987.  The young couple moved to Singapore and officially began the Central Christian Church of Singapore in 1988. Today, John and Karen Louis, together with their Core Group, lead the SEA churches region (South-East Asia Region of churches), comprising almost 30 churches with over 4,300 members.
John and Karen both hold a Masters in Counselling from Monash University of Melbourne, Australia, and are members of professional counselling associations in America, Australia and Singapore.  As founders of Movie TherapyTM, John and Karen incorporate the use of multi-media in workshops for churches as well as secular organizations, and have taught marriage and parenting workshops all over the world. John is a certified Schema Therapist and member of the International Society for Schema Therapist (ISST), having been trained by Dr. Jeffrey Young, the founder of Schema Therapy. Karen is a certified Solution-Focused Therapist and sits on the executive committee of the Singapore Association of Counselling.  They have two teenagers who are both disciples, and the whole family enjoys watching movies, visiting with friends, travelling, and experiencing new adventures together.

About the Programmes

John and Karen Louis feel blessed to have been located in Southeast Asia for over 20 years, and they are grateful for all their friends in the ICOC who have made that possible, including many friends around the world, especially the Southeast Asia Core Group, as well as the amazing staff and lay leadership of the Singapore church.  For the past eight years, the Louis and their staff have been trained in many aspects of counselling and communication, and have been integrating their skills into a unique toolbox of both biblical and therapeutic expertise. In order to meet the needs of their congregation in Singapore, John and Karen put together several workshops for marriage and family, which have profoundly helped their ministries in Asia. "I Choose Us"  (ICU) - a 6-part marriage programme, and "Good Enough Parenting" (GEP) - an 8-module parenting programme based on schema therapy, were originally conceived as strengthening programmes for their members, but have now evolved into also being evangelistic in nature. As others have heard about the success of these workshops, the Louis have received numerous requests to equip other leaders in the ICOC to be able to replicate these programmes.

Why Do I Behave The Way I Do?

Do you often feel lonely? Are you sometimes down on yourself and others? Do you frequently doubt yourself? Do you fear that your loved ones will leave you? Do you find it difficult to trust people?

These are issues that many of us grapple with daily and they interfere with some of our most important relationships: marriage partners, children and close friends. These unhealthy behaviors are rooted in negative thinking and are called “lifetraps” (schemas). Where do they come from? Are they a result of biological factors? Does a person’s environment have anything to do with it? How does God fit into it?

In the series, “Why Do I Behave the Way I Do?” schema therapist John Louis will take us on a journey that will help us uncover the origins of the these lifetraps and help us break these self-defeating patterns. This series combines movie scenes (with copyright permission) with teaching materials, making this learning approach enjoyable and captivating, while at the same time sobering and insightful.

“I Choose Us!”

I Choose Us draws from the Scriptures, credible research, and the Louis’ life experiences to build a strong case for the importance of having a healthy, vibrant marriage. It takes readers through the different phases of marriage and gives practical biblical advice about how to build Love Connection by showing real love and respect to our spouses. With the help of questionnaires, this workshop and its corresponding “I Choose Us” book, also gives valuable insights into unhealthy thinking patterns, called lifetraps (schemas). Rather than relying on ineffective communication and behaviour that invariably leads to the Vortex of Conflict Escalation, I Choose Us helps couples break harmful cycles, and avoid hurtful coping styles as they practice vulnerability and forgiveness.

“Good Enough Parenting”

Research has shown that when core needs are not met during the formative years of a child, "Lifetraps" (schemas) will develop. These core needs are:
1) Basic Safety
2) Guidance & Protection
3) Stable Base & Predictability
4) Reasonable Limits
5) Love, Nurturing & Attention
6) Empathy & Validation of Feelings
7) Acceptance & Praise
8) Spirituality
While no one's parenting can ever be perfect, "Good Enough Parenting" offers a step-by-step guide on how parents can learn to meet these core needs, and provide parenting that is "good-enough" to prevent Lifetraps from developing in their children. "Good Enough Parenting" - a series of eight parenting workshops - was developed by John and Karen Louis and is based on Schema Therapy.

"In a world of too much information, 'Good Enough Parenting' uses movies to teach parents how to MEET CORE NEEDS, and, at the same time, how to avoid passing down their own dysfunctional behaviours. Schema Therapy has been successful with adults, but I have always wanted to see someone do something on preventing schemas, or Lifetraps, in children, and here it is!" ~ Dr Jeffrey Young ~ Dept of Psychiatry, Columbia University, USA ~ Founder, Schema Therapy

Budapest report:

"
We’ve got in contact with the Louis about 15 months ago and heard the great job they were doing in reaching people through movie therapy. This was at a point in our ministry when we were looking for ways of getting our Families Ministry outward focused and found this program a God-sent.

So far we have done three sessions of the workshop in Budapest with great success. The combination of biblical principles and easy-to-understand schema-therapy concepts are a very convincing package. It is so convincing you can’t really argue with it. But the other novelty of the program is the packaging. Using movie clips you can catch even the most defensive parents off guard (and parenting is not an area where we can take correction easily), the clips make you laugh, cry and get you involved emotionally.

The members of our Families Ministry love the program, you hear them refer back to some of the concepts even months later – movie clips stick in your brain. But the other encouraging news is to see more and more visitors come to these events. We’ve had a great success in bringing families (we offer child care during the classes), more families than to any other event so far 50-80% visitor to member ratio. Now we are at the point where we have a group of regulars coming to every class calling us to see when the next class would be. Through this program we’ve studied the Bible with more families in the last year than the previous three years combined. I believe that speaks for itself.

Last fall we even had the Hungarian National Television do an interview with Virág and me on what we do for families in our church and they featured our Good Enough Parenting classes. We are grateful to the Louis for this great tool in helping parents and reaching non-Christian families."

~ Peti & Virág Szabad ~ Evangelist and Women's Ministry Leader of Budapest Church of Christ

"John and Karen Louis did a great job with the programs. I liked it so much. This is a wonderful additional tool for studying Scriptures, for shepherding care and for the personal spiritual growth. It really helped me as a minister, but what I didn't expect that it would help me personally so much as a disciple of Jesus. I am very grateful. I have never had a chance to get such thorough care as during this seminar. I was glad to learn more how to know and fulfill the needs of people and my own needs through the deeper and more accurate knowledge of God.
To summarize the effect of the program: it is getting free of burdens, free of the lies of satan about yourself and the world, it is getting free of those unhealthy views that prevent you from having a full life in Christ."

~ Alexey Zhuravliov ~ Evangelist of South-West Region, Moscow Church of Christ
